Grasscloth is woven from real plant fibers glued to a paper backing. No two strips are identical, the color shifts subtly along the roll, and the fibers cannot line up edge to edge the way a printed pattern does. That means every seam is visible as a gentle vertical line — the "paneled" look designers love and first-time buyers sometimes don't expect.
We handle it three ways. First, we tell you before you order, with photos of finished rooms, so there are no surprises. Second, we plan the seam layout on the wall so the panels are even and centered, not a random strip ending at the corner. Third, we reverse-hang alternating strips when the material calls for it, which balances the color shift so the wall reads as one surface.
Grasscloth dining roomDye lots. Every roll must come from the same lot, and even then we unroll and compare them in daylight before cutting. A mismatched roll in the middle of a wall can't be fixed later.
A clean paste, a dry hand. Paste that squeezes onto the face of grasscloth stains it permanently. We paste the wall or the backing precisely, keep the face dry, and never wipe the seams the way you would with vinyl.
Double-cut seams. The strips are overlapped and cut through both layers with one pass for a perfect butt joint — the only way to get a seam that lies flat on a material this thick.
Acclimation and Utah's dry air. Rolls sit in the room for 24 hours first. Low humidity speeds drying and can make a strip shrink back from a seam if it was hung too fast; we adjust open time and, on the driest winter days, run a humidifier in the room.
The right rooms. Dining rooms, bedrooms, offices, powder rooms, living rooms and ceilings. Not shower walls or the splash zone behind a kitchen sink — natural fibers stain and can't be scrubbed. For a bathroom, we'll steer you to a faux grasscloth vinyl that reads almost identically and wipes clean.
Care. Dust with a soft brush or the vacuum's upholstery tool. No water, no cleaners. We leave you a one-page care sheet with the guarantee.
