Most of the wallpaper sold today is non-woven or vinyl. It's washable, dimensionally stable, and strips cleanly years later — if it's hung on a primed wall by someone who knows the difference between the two.
Non-woven is a blend of cellulose and polyester fibers. It doesn't expand when wet, so we paste the wall and hang dry strips straight from the roll — fast, clean, and easy to strip in one piece later. It's the default for most patterned papers from Spoonflower, Rebel Walls, York, Graham & Brown and the designer houses.
Vinyl (paper-backed or fabric-backed) is the scrubbable choice for kitchens, baths, mudrooms and kids' rooms. It's heavier, needs a stronger adhesive and a careful seam roll, and holds up to years of fingerprints.
Embossed and textured papers — paintable Anaglypta-style textures, faux plaster, faux grasscloth vinyl — add depth without the fragility of natural fibers, and they hide minor wall imperfections better than flat papers.
Embossed textured vinyl, entry hallPrime, always. A wallcovering primer-sealer gives the paste something to grip and lets the paper strip cleanly in ten years. Hanging on bare drywall or flat paint is how bathroom wallpaper ends up on the floor.
The right paste for the material. Clear strippable adhesive for non-woven, heavy-duty clay or vinyl-over-vinyl adhesive for fabric-backed vinyl and overlaps. The wrong one either fails or never comes off.
Seams rolled, not squeezed. Pressed just enough to close, then wiped clean, so there's no shiny paste line down the wall.
Kitchens and baths. Vinyl or a vinyl-coated paper, primer plus a mildew-resistant adhesive, and we seal the top edge behind the counter or above the tub surround so steam can't get under it.
Pre-pasted papers. Some big-box and heritage lines come pre-pasted. We activate them in a water tray and book them properly — the step most DIY jobs skip, and the reason those seams open.
On smooth, primed walls. Paper not included.
