We check the plaster for loose areas and old calcimine or paper, repair cracks, and use a primer-sealer made for plaster so the new paper bonds without pulling the surface. We can also work around picture rails, tall baseboards and original trim so the room keeps its period character.
We do. Homes in the Jefferson Avenue and Central Bench districts often have three or more layers over plaster, and we remove them with steam and enzyme strippers rather than aggressive scraping to protect the wall. Afterward we wash off residue, skim damaged spots and prime for paint or new paper.
