Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) wallpaper installation in Utah

An installer's guide to Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.): how the papers hang, what it costs to have them put up on a northern Utah wall, the patterns people ask for most, and where to buy them.

About the brand

What Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) is known for

New York's grande dame of decorative fabric and wallpaper (est. 1889 by Frederic Schumacher): White House and Gilded Age commissions, classic American chintz and chinoiserie (Pyne Hollyhock, Chiang Mai Dragon), Josef Frank archival prints (Citrus Garden), mid-century metallics (Queen of Spain, 1963) and a monthly cadence of new collections with a long roster of designer collaborations.

How you buy it. Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) sells to the trade, so homeowners usually order through an interior designer, a showroom or a retailer that carries the line. We can source it for you as part of a Design Session, or hang rolls you have already bought.

What it costs to buy. Retail roughly $28-$690 per yard/panel. Core printed papers and non-wovens about $90-$160 per yard sold in 9 yd (2 x 4.5 yd) double rolls, i.e.

Installer's notes

How Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) papers install

 • Pick the paste by substrate exactly as Schumacher's hanging-instructions page lists it: Ultra-Clear/PRO-880 for papers, non-wovens and foils; Heavy Clear/PRO-838 for vinyls and sisals; clay or heavy clear acrylic for bamboo; never dilute, and add a mildew inhibitor.
 • Non-wovens are paste-the-wall only ('dry hang'); Schumacher wants the wall paste to tack up 7-15 minutes before the strip goes on, which is quick in Utah's dry air, so paste one strip width at a time.
 • Paper types and metallic/foil types are listed as needing lining paper in Schumacher's guide; book 5-7 minutes, use no metal smoothers, and keep water and paste off the face - Queen of Spain in particular is flagged as very sensitive to moisture.
 • The three-strip rule is contractual: Schumacher allows no claims once more than three strips are on the wall and none after 30 days from invoice, so verify pattern, colorway, dye lot and roll count on every bolt before cutting, and request a CFA (cutting for approval) from the retailer on large orders.
 • Sisals and grasscloths (Feather Bloom, Acanthus Stripe Sisal, Haruki) come in 8 yd rolls 29.5-36 in wide with visible seams and roll-to-roll color shift; sort rolls per wall, reverse-hang where non-directional, use PRO-838, and tell the client care is vacuum-only.
 • Roll math differs by line: printed papers are 27 in x 4.5 yd single rolls sold as 9 yd bolts (about 60.75 sq ft); panel sets like Citrus Garden are 26 in x 4.5 yd panels sold in pairs (A/B), and huge repeats (45-65 in) push waste up, so order 15-20% extra from one lot.
Roll or strip size27" x 27', about 60.75 sq ft (double roll / bolt)
Backingpaper (most prints, sisals), non-woven (newer prints, Backdrop), fabric/osnaburg (54 in vinyls)
Paste methodpaste-the-paper for paper, vinyl, sisal, metallic, bamboo and upholstery types; paste-the-wall (dry hang) for non-wovens
AdhesiveSchumacher: paper, non-woven and metallic/foil = Ultra-Clear Strippable (Roman PRO-880); vinyl and sisal = Heavy Clear Strippable (Roman PRO-838); bamboo = clay or heavy-duty clear acrylic; upholstery-backed = heavy-duty clear acrylic. Do not dilute; mildew inhibitor recommended; store goods at 70 F.
Typical repeatLarge: Chiang Mai Dragon 45.75 in half-drop; Pyne Hollyhock 47.5 in half-drop; Citrus Garden 32 in vertical / 52 in horizontal half-drop panel set; Queen of Spain 36 in straight (49 in wide); Feather Bloom Sisal 65.5 in straight; small-scale stripes 5 in; plain sisals random
Match typesstraight, half-drop, random
WashabilityPrinted papers: not washable (Queen of Spain 'very sensitive to moisture'); non-wovens and vinyls: spongeable to scrubbable per product; grasscloth/sisal: vacuum only with soft brush
From the brand's hanging instructions: Schumacher UK hanging guide (mirrors US guidance): walls smooth, clean, mildew/grease-free, pigmented acrylic wallcovering primer; keep rooms above 55 F for 3 days after hanging; new plaster 90-120 days; inspect every roll for pattern, color, dye lot and count before cutting - 'NO CLAIMS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR MORE THAN (3) STRIPS ON THE WALL', claims within 30 days, no labor claims; book pasted strips 5-7 minutes; plumb every wall; no metal smoothing tools; new blade every cut; light seam-roller pressure; reverse-hang non-directional textures; grasscloth seams show and color varies roll to roll (choose similar rolls per wall, reverse if paneling appears); hand-printed papers vary, measure each strip's repeat. Retail returns: 25% restocking fee, unopened, within 30 days; Schumacher minimum 4 yards / 4 rolls on returns.

Specs are drawn from the brand's published instructions and product pages and can change by pattern — we confirm against the label on your rolls before cutting anything.

FAQ

Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) questions

Do I need an interior designer to buy Schumacher wallpaper for my Utah home?

Not anymore. Schumacher is still a to-the-trade house with hidden pricing on schumacher.com and its nearest showrooms in Denver and Scottsdale, but homeowners can buy through its Backdrop site, through authorized online retailers such as The WorkRoom, DecoratorsBest or Mahone's (which state no designer is required), or through a designer or installer with a trade account. Expect roughly $800-$1,450 per 9-yard bolt for the classic printed papers and 2-roll or 2-panel minimums.

Why does my installer want to inspect every roll before hanging Chiang Mai Dragon or Pyne Hollyhock?

Because Schumacher's hanging instructions allow no claims once more than three strips are on the wall and none after 30 days from invoice, and hand-printed papers vary strip to strip. The installer checks pattern, colorway, dye lot and roll count, measures the repeat, hangs three strips, then continues; paper types also get lining paper, an Ultra-Clear strippable paste and 5-7 minutes of booking, and moisture must stay off the face (Queen of Spain is flagged as very moisture-sensitive).

Will Schumacher sisal or grasscloth like Feather Bloom show seams, and how is it hung?

Yes. Schumacher says seams will show and color will vary through the rolls because the ground is a natural fiber; the installer groups similar rolls per wall, may reverse-hang alternate strips if paneling appears, uses a heavy clear strippable adhesive (PRO-838) and keeps paste off the face. Rolls are 29.5-36 inches wide and 8 yards long, sold in 8-yard increments, and the finished wall is vacuum-only for cleaning.

I already bought Schumacher (F. Schumacher & Co.) wallpaper. Will you install it?

Yes. Send us the pattern link, a few photos of the wall and its dimensions and you'll have a written price in one business day; keep the rolls sealed until we've checked the batch numbers. If you haven't ordered yet, send the link first — we'll confirm the roll count against the pattern's repeat so you don't come up short.
