Rooms · Powder rooms

Powder rooms: the best first wallpaper project in the house.

Small walls, no shower steam, a door you can close, and guests who will actually notice. If you've never had wallpaper, start here — and be bolder than you think.

What works

Small room, big pattern. That's the rule.

A powder room is the one room where a large-scale mural, a dark moody botanical or a metallic chinoiserie doesn't overwhelm — it delights. The space is too small to read as a whole, so a big repeat becomes a kind of art, and a dark color makes the room feel deliberate instead of cramped.

It's also forgiving on the budget: roughly 150–200 square feet of wall, usually three or four double rolls, one day of installation. And because most powder rooms have no shower, almost any material works, including grasscloth and paper-backed silks that we'd steer you away from in a full bath.

Materials & patterns

What works in powder rooms

Large-scale murals and scenic panels

Four panels centered on the vanity wall; the picture reads from the doorway.

Dark and moody botanicals

Navy, forest, charcoal; pair with a brass sconce and a warm bulb.

Metallics and mica

They love the small footprint and the mirror.

Grasscloth

Fine in a powder room without a shower; keep it away from the sink splash zone.

Ceiling too

Powder rooms are the easiest place to drench walls and ceiling in one pattern.

Avoid: Bargain peel-and-stick

Humidity from hand-washing and small corners lift it within months.

Avoid: Tiny patterns

They read as texture and waste the one room where you can be bold.

FAQ

Powder rooms questions

How much does it cost to wallpaper a powder room?

Ballpark labor $1,200–$1,700 on smooth, primed walls, more if the walls are textured or currently papered — see the room matrix on the pricing page. Plus the paper: usually three to four double rolls.

Can I wallpaper the ceiling too?

Yes, and powder rooms are the easiest place to do it. Budget for a two-person hang and expect it to be the thing every guest mentions.

What about the mirror and sconces?

We pull the sconce plates and hang behind them; the mirror is best removed and rehung. Tell us in the photos and we'll plan the pattern around them.
