Most "wallpaper vs. paint" articles are written by someone selling one of them. We sell both. So we can tell you plainly where each one wins, and where the combination beats either one alone.
Short version: paint is cheaper, faster, and easier to change. Wallpaper gives you pattern, texture, and depth that paint cannot, and a good install lasts a long time. Cost up front
Wallpaper costs more to put up. There is no way around that.

Take a 12-by-12 bedroom with about 400 square feet of wall. Painting it starts around $1,000 in labor. Hanging standard wallpaper on the same smooth walls runs about $1,600–$2,800 in labor, plus the paper, plus skim coating if the walls are textured, which in Utah they often are. So wallpaper is roughly two to four times the cost of paint for the same room. All SwiftHand figures here are ballpark starting ranges; we confirm after seeing the room.
Cost over time
Here is where the gap narrows, though it does not close.
Paint gets scuffed, faded, and dated. Most people repaint a busy room every several years, and each repaint costs about what the first one did. Quality vinyl or non-woven wallpaper, hung on primed walls, stays put and wipes clean for many years. If you love the pattern in year eight as much as year one, you have paid once.
The honest catch is the exit cost. When you are done with paint, you paint over it. When you are done with wallpaper, it has to come off. Angi's July 15, 2026 removal guide puts that at an average of $793, and if the paper was hung on unprimed drywall, wall repair can add $100–$1,000 more. So the fair ten-year comparison looks like this for that same bedroom, using our ballpark bands and assuming one repaint in the paint scenario:

Wallpaper still costs more. What you are paying for is the look.
Durability
Paint is easy to touch up and easy to damage. Flat paint marks if you look at it wrong; eggshell and satin hold up better.
Wallpaper depends entirely on the material and the install. Vinyl and vinyl-coated papers are the workhorses. They handle kids, hallways, and kitchens, and they scrub. Non-woven papers are strong, breathable, and strip off in one piece when the time comes. Grasscloth and silk are beautiful and fragile; they belong in dining rooms and bedrooms, not mudrooms. Peel-and-stick is the least durable of the group, and on textured walls it often does not stay up at all.
The install matters as much as the paper. Seams that lift, bubbles, and corners that peel are almost always prep problems: unprimed walls, paste that dried too fast in our dry air, or texture that was never smoothed. That is why our guarantee covers workmanship and why we will not skip primer to save a day.
Resale value
We want to be direct here because a lot of sites are not.
Zillow's March 24, 2026 analysis of more than two million 2025 listings and over 600 listing phrases found that the features tied to higher sale prices were things like docks (5.4 percent premium), quartzite counters (5.3 percent), outdoor kitchens (4.4 percent), and the word "cottage" (3.2 percent). Wallpaper does not appear on the list at all. Neither does a fresh paint color.
Houzz's Fall 2025 U.S. Design Trends Report describes a "Wallpaper Re-Revival" and ties it to homeowners moving away from decorating for resale toward decorating for themselves. That is the right way to think about it. Wallpaper is a personalization purchase, like a favorite sofa. Buy it because you will enjoy looking at it, not because it will pay you back.
The resale risk with wallpaper is a buyer who hates your pattern. Keep bold paper to smaller rooms and accent walls if you plan to sell within a few years, or hang non-woven paper that strips cleanly.
Where paint wins
- Whole-house refreshes and rentals, where cost per square foot rules.
- Rooms you plan to change often, like kids' rooms.
- Hallways and mudrooms that take a beating and need quick touch-ups.
- Textured walls you do not want to skim coat.
- Ceilings in most rooms, unless you want a true statement.
Where wallpaper wins
- Powder rooms, where a small amount of paper delivers a big result. See our powder room ideas.
- Dining rooms and primary bedrooms, where texture like grasscloth adds warmth paint cannot.
- Accent walls behind a bed or a console.
- Nurseries and playrooms, where murals become part of the story.
- Any room where you want pattern. Paint has color; it does not have pattern.
What designers are doing in 2026
Two trends matter for this decision. The 1stDibs 2026 Interior Designer Trends Survey, which polled 468 design professionals in July and August 2025, found 35 percent expect "color drenching" to grow and 35 percent expect wallpapered ceilings to grow, while 39 percent named maximalism as the most requested look.
Color drenching means painting walls, trim, doors, and sometimes the ceiling in one color. It is a paint trend, and it is a strong one. Wallpapered ceilings are its wallpaper cousin. We wrote a full guide on ceilings as the fifth wall. Both trends say the same thing: people are treating rooms as whole envelopes again, not four white walls.
The combination approach
This is what we would do in our own homes, and it is the advantage of hiring a painting company that also hangs paper.
- Paper one wall, paint three. An accent wall in a bedroom or living room at $7–$10 per square foot, with the other walls painted in a color pulled from the paper. Cost stays close to a paint job; impact does not.
- Drench the room, paper the ceiling. Walls and trim in one deep color, a patterned ceiling above. This is the 2026 look in one move.
- Paper below, paint above. Grasscloth to a picture rail or chair rail, paint above it. The fragile material stays where hands do not reach.
- Paint the powder room ceiling to match the paper's background. A cheap trick that makes a small room feel finished.
One crew, one estimate, one color conversation. The painter knows what sheen the wallpaper primer needs; the paper hanger knows how long the paint must cure. Tempaper's own install instructions say newly painted surfaces should cure at least four weeks before peel-and-stick goes on, and Chasing Paper's FAQ says four to six weeks. When one company does both, that schedule gets built in instead of discovered.
FAQ
Is wallpaper cheaper than paint? No. Wallpaper labor starts at $7–$10 per square foot in our ballpark bands versus painting from $2.50, and you buy the paper on top. Wallpaper is a step up in cost and in effect.
Does wallpaper increase home value? Not measurably. Zillow's 2026 study of features that sell for more does not include wallpaper. Treat it as something you buy for yourself.
Which lasts longer, wallpaper or paint? Well-installed vinyl or non-woven wallpaper on primed walls usually outlasts a coat of paint in the same room, especially where walls get touched. Grasscloth and peel-and-stick are exceptions.
Can you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it? Sometimes, but it is a shortcut that makes future removal harder and more expensive. We recommend removal, wash, prime, then paint.
Can I do an accent wall and have you paint the rest? Yes. That is our most common combined job, and one estimate covers both.
