Removing wallpaper is the one wallpaper job most people try themselves. Sometimes it goes fine. Sometimes we get a call two weekends later from someone standing in a room with torn drywall, sticky walls, and a rented steamer that is due back.
This guide covers both outcomes. You will get the real cost numbers, the steps in the right order, the three ways removal goes wrong, and a clear line for when to stop and call. What wallpaper removal costs in 2026
Angi's July 15, 2026 removal guide puts the national average at $793, with most projects between $423 and $1,192. Per square foot, Angi lists $0.60–$3, split as $0.60–$1.50 for simple stripping and $1–$3 when steaming is needed, or $40–$80 per hour. Other guides land in the same neighborhood.

The number that surprises people is not the removal. It is the repair. Angi's guide adds $100–$1,000 for wall repairs and $50–$150 for disposal. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 install guide prices drywall repair at $50–$75 per square foot or $60–$90 per hour. Locally, reviews of one Salt Lake installer on HomeAdvisor show removal jobs from $235 to $1,200, which tells you how much the condition of the walls swings the total.
SwiftHand's starting ranges
As a ballpark, we start removal at $1.50–$3 per square foot and skim coating at $2–$4.50 per square foot, with a $1,000 project minimum. Those are starting ranges. What is under the paper decides where in the band you land, and we confirm the final number after we see it.
A 12-by-12 bedroom has roughly 400 square feet of wall. Removal alone would run about $600–$1,200. If the drywall needs a full skim coat afterward, add $800–$1,800. If it strips clean and only needs washing and a couple of patches, you stay near the low end.
How to remove wallpaper, step by step
This is the method York Wallcoverings publishes in its own removal instructions, and it is the same order we follow.
1. Find out what you have
Lift a corner with a putty knife. Three things can happen:
- Strippable paper pulls straight down in a dry sheet. You got lucky.
- Peelable paper pulls off its top layer and leaves a paper backing on the wall. The backing must be soaked and scraped.
- Nothing moves. It is traditional paper, or it has been painted over. Plan for the full process.
2. Protect the room
Kill power to the outlets and tape over them. Lay plastic under drop cloths, because you are about to make the floor wet and sticky. Pull outlet and switch covers.
3. Score
Roll a scoring tool over the paper in light, overlapping circles. You want tiny holes for water to get through, not gouges into the drywall. Pressing hard here is the first place DIY removal goes wrong.
4. Soak
Mix hot water with a wallpaper remover or a little fabric softener. Work in sections about three feet wide, which is what York recommends, so the wall does not dry before you reach it. Spray, wait several minutes, spray again. A steamer does the same job faster on stubborn paper and painted-over paper.
5. Scrape
Use a wide, flexible scraper held at a low angle. Let the water do the work. If the paper fights you, it needs more soak time, not more force.
6. Wash the paste off
This step gets skipped and it causes most of the problems. Old paste left on the wall will bubble the new paint or fail the new wallpaper. Wash with warm water and a little detergent, rinse, and go over it a second time with a clean sponge until the wall no longer feels tacky.
7. Let it dry, then look hard
York says to give the walls two to three days to dry completely. Then shine a work light across the surface at a low angle. Every gouge, torn spot, and shiny paste patch shows up. Patch, sand, and prime with a wallcovering or drywall primer before you paint or paper.
The three ways removal goes wrong
We repair these every month. None of them are your fault. They are built into old walls.
Torn drywall paper. Drywall has a paper face. When someone hung wallpaper on bare, unprimed drywall, the paste bonded to that face. Pull the wallpaper and the drywall face comes with it in fuzzy brown patches. Those patches must be sealed with a primer made for the job before any mud goes on, or the compound will bubble. Then the wall needs a skim coat.
Glue residue. Paste that was never washed off leaves a sheen you can feel. Paint over it and you get "alligator" cracking or peeling in a few months. New wallpaper over it will not bond evenly.
Painted-over wallpaper. A previous owner painted the paper instead of removing it. Now water cannot reach the paste. Heavy scoring and steaming work, but slowly, and the wall underneath usually comes out rough. This is the most common reason a removal job turns into a skim-coat job.
When to stop and call a pro
Do it yourself if the paper is strippable or peelable, the drywall is sound, the room is small, and you have a free weekend plus two or three dry days.
Call us if any of these is true:
- The paper has been painted over.
- The drywall face is tearing as you pull.
- You see bare, unprimed drywall under the paper.
- The room is a stairwell, has high ceilings, or covers more than about 400 square feet.
- You plan to hang new wallpaper. Removal quality decides how the next paper looks.
There is a licensing point here too. Utah does not require a contractor license to hang or strip wallpaper; Utah Administrative Code R156-55a-301 lists "wall paper hanging" among activities exempt from licensure. Drywall repair and skim coating above the small-project exemption are a different matter, and that is contractor work. For the 400 sq ft bedroom, a full remove-skim-repaint runs roughly $2,400–$4,000 in labor as a ballpark, and a strip-and-repaint on sound walls about $1,600–$2,200. We will tell you which one you actually need after we lift a corner.
FAQ
How long does wallpaper removal take? A small powder room is usually a half day for us. A bedroom is a day. Then the walls need two to three days to dry before paint or new paper, per York's guidance. Plan the room to be out of service for most of a week.
Can I just paint over wallpaper? You can, and someone probably did it in your house already. It is the reason removal later costs more. If the seams are tight and the paper is well bonded, painting over it is possible, but it is a shortcut that the next owner pays for.
Can new wallpaper go over old wallpaper? Almost never a good idea. Old seams telegraph through, and the new paste can loosen the old paper. Remove first, then prime.
Do you remove peel-and-stick wallpaper? Yes. It usually comes off cleanly from primed, smooth walls. On flat paint or textured walls it can pull paint and drywall paper with it, which is the same repair as traditional removal.
Is it cheaper to have you remove the paper and then paint it myself? Yes, and plenty of clients do that. Ask us to leave the walls "paint-ready," meaning washed, patched, sanded, and primed.
