Bathrooms: the right paper for the wet room.

Yes, you can wallpaper a bathroom. The material, the ventilation and the primer decide whether it lasts ten years or one winter.

What works

Vinyl or vinyl-faced non-woven, sealed edges, a fan you use.

For a full bath with a shower, we use vinyl or vinyl-faced non-woven papers, a mildew-resistant adhesive over a wallcovering primer, and we seal the top edges above tile and behind the vanity so steam can't get under them. Keep the paper out of the shower surround itself and off the wall the tub splashes. Run the fan.

Utah's dry climate helps: rooms dry fast between showers. Powder rooms without a shower are open to almost any material; that's the room to be brave in.

Materials & patterns

What works in bathrooms

Vinyl and vinyl-faced non-woven

Wipeable, moisture-tolerant.

Faux grasscloth vinyl

The texture without the stain risk.

Bold patterns in small baths

Same logic as the powder room.

Ceilings in small baths

A surprise overhead.

Avoid: Real grasscloth, silk, paper near water

They stain and lift.

Avoid: Any paper inside the shower or tub surround

Tile lives there.

Avoid: Peel-and-stick

Humidity is its enemy.

FAQ

Bathrooms questions

Will the wallpaper peel in a bathroom?

Not if it's the right material over a primer with sealed edges and a working fan. Most bathroom wallpaper failures are the wrong paper on an unprimed wall with no ventilation.

How much does a bathroom cost?

A typical full bath is about 200 square feet of paperable wall; ballpark labor $1,400–$2,000 on smooth walls. Textured walls add a skim coat.

Can I wallpaper above tile?

Yes — that's the classic split. We seal the edge where paper meets tile so steam can't get behind it.
