Bedrooms: the headboard wall, or the whole room.

Most bedroom wallpaper starts with one wall behind the bed. Some of it ends with all four and the ceiling. Both are right; here's how to choose.

What works

Start with the wall you see from the door.

A headboard wall is the natural accent: the bed anchors it, the pattern frames it, and the other three walls in a pulled color keep the room calm. Large-scale botanicals, soft murals and textured papers all work. If you want the room to feel enveloping — a 'jewel box' — go all four walls in a smaller repeat or a texture, and consider the ceiling in a lighter tone of the same paper.

Bedrooms are low-traffic and dry, so material choice is wide open: non-woven for prints, grasscloth for texture, silk-look papers for the primary suite. This is also the room where a Design Session pays off, because scale and color are everything and you'll look at this wall every morning.

Materials & patterns

What works in bedrooms

Headboard accent wall

Large-scale botanical or mural; paint the rest.

Four walls in texture

Grasscloth or a linen-look non-woven for a hotel-suite feel.

Ceiling in a soft pattern

Especially in rooms with low light.

Kids' and guest rooms

Scrubbable non-woven, brighter patterns.

Avoid: Glossy vinyl in a primary suite

It reads as commercial.

Avoid: High-contrast small prints on all walls

Restless in a room meant for sleep.
