Designers say wallpapered ceilings are the trend to watch, and they're right: nothing changes a room faster. We also paper stairwells, curved walls, niches, closets and the backs of bookcases.
Gravity, for one. Heavier papers and grasscloth need adhesive with real tack and an installer who can hold a strip overhead while the seam is set. Lighting, for another: a ceiling is raked by every fixture and window, so texture and seams show more than on a wall — which is why the skim coat has to be flawless before the paper goes up.
Then there's layout. A ceiling has no "behind the door" to hide a mismatched seam. We plan the strips to run with the room's main sightline and center the pattern on the light fixture or the bed.
Wallpapered ceiling, dining roomCeilings. Skim-coated and primed like a wall, hung with a two-person crew on a stable platform, seams double-checked under the fixture light. Ballpark labor runs above the standard wall range; a typical single-story room ceiling is a one-to-two-day job.
Stairwells. Scaffold or a stair platform, plumb lines carried around every turn, and the pattern kept continuous across the tall wall where the seams are most visible from the landing.
Curved walls and arches. Non-woven and vinyl bend; grasscloth doesn't. We steer the material choice to the curve and relief-cut where the geometry demands it.
Niches, closets, bookcase backs and stair risers. Small surfaces, big effect, and a good use for a single leftover roll. Often quoted as an add-on to a larger job so the minimum doesn't apply.
Doors and furniture. Yes, occasionally — a paneled door in a powder room, the back of a hutch. Ask.
Ceilings and stairwells run above the standard wall range.
